They are very alert and notice anything out of the ordinary - you really can't put anything past them!

We are trying a few things though (portable electronet fencing ($$), bringing the sheep inside at night (free!), and I think having the cattle around near the barn helps a bit too. We do hear the coyotes at night though.

We heard of these little solar powered boxes though with two red LED lights on them to look like the eyes of predators to scare off coyotes. I think they were first used in New Zealand. I think they're around $20-$40. I'm not sure yet but we might get a few to try in some of the farther pastures from the barn.Caithttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15500707544582090774noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7974545576568482389.post-80316678368237011842012-02-10T08:42:37.824-05:002012-02-10T08:42:37.824-05:00There are also beautiful (although in bad shape) w...There are also beautiful (although in bad shape) wood floor beams under the sticky tile...

I think they're going to kick me out of the old house club for covering them over again O.OVanessahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11375259718817439088noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7974545576568482389.post-37267763852354410632012-02-10T08:41:59.380-05:002012-02-10T08:41:59.380-05:00Oh! They'd better be paying me back for all that money!

Was talking to one of our customers yesterday and she mentioned she got an egg that tasted different because it was from one of the older hens. I've had them too, they are a little watery and just not as yummy. Fine for baking, but just another reason to cull the oldies.

Unfortunately I haven't quite figured out who our oldies are yet! Time for a food-dye test after the holidays, and we'll be having some chicken soup.
(Food-dye test would be putting some food dye on their vents, so it will dye the eggs slightly)Vanessahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11375259718817439088noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7974545576568482389.post-61472630246230512672011-12-23T08:15:43.716-05:002011-12-23T08:15:43.716-05:00I leave lights on 24/7. I went to go check on them late last night, and I was starting to worry I couldn't find them. Then I noticed the two tiny black sausages right at the door buried under the hay :D.

We've already sold one of their pigglets, and they're still babies themselves! Although we're having a bit of a "problem" with them trying to mate :S. Need to do some more research.

I can't imagine why people think they make good apartment/house pets but I think they are going to make a great addition to the farm. I can't wait to let them out into the garden & see what they can do. Nuzzling the little prize under her belly. She's got 5 now (1 EE 2 Buff? 1 BPR 1 Cochin) and I think she's maxed out, if we get a Maran today (fingers crossed!) I'll give her one more and that'll be it (she is a bantam).

I know on the BBC doc "The Private Life of Chickens" they had students "teach" the chickens to pick out certain shapes (i.e. star or square) to get a treat, so they can definitely tell the difference.

I just find it amazing that when you compare chickens and ducks to a bird like the warbler, who probably because of pressure from nest parasitism by the cuckoo, has evolved to kick any eggs that is slightly off in colour or shape out of their nests. Versus the domestic birds where you can have a tiny little silky hatch out ducks eggs and raise them!Vanessahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11375259718817439088noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7974545576568482389.post-54131751399248161062011-10-21T09:14:26.363-04:002011-10-21T09:14:26.363-04:00This post reminded me of a video we were shown in ...This post reminded me of a video we were shown in Animal Behaviour class in university.
